Compilations albums 1989-1998

I thought I'd rank the compilation albums of this time period based on how well they did on the ARIA compilation charts (I've improvised albums that predated the launch of these charts in 1989 to fill out the list) seeing as though they did have quite the presence in our music scene throughout the 90's. For the sake of my sanity, I'm only including entries on here that cracked the AMR top twenty album charts as well as one entry that failed to do so but made it on a yearend list. If I didn't then this will be filled with obscure entries I doubt anyone new about even when they first came out (heck I'd be shocked if anyone recognises the entries towards the bottom of the list as is.) One final thing to note is that there doesn't seem to be any compilation charts online past June 1998, meaning that entries from the second half of that year will be absent on here as well as those from the midpoint being presented far lower than they likely deserve to be.

This was the third year in a row where a Triple J compilation album was among the most successful albums in Australia, although I'm basing this list on the AMR charts as these albums naturally didn't chart on the ARIA charts due to ARIA considering them compilation albums and thus excluding them from their rankings.

This was the fourth year in a row where a Triple J compilation album was among the most successful albums in Australia, although I'm basing this list on the AMR charts as these albums naturally didn't chart on the ARIA charts due to ARIA considering them compilation albums and thus excluding them from their rankings.

Following the success of their first annual countdown at the start of the year, the Radio station Triple J decided to release a compilation album containing many of the songs that appeared on the countdown which became a huge success for them. Naturally they would continue this trend to this day as each of these albums do extremely well every year for them, although they tend to go on the compilation charts on ARIA.

Well, you better believe that the 100% hits series would also have a highly successful annual album to compete with the Smash hit's entry from earlier, I guess the takeaway here is that 1993 was seen as an excellent year for music according to the Australian public of the time.

This was a tribute album to Elton John and Bernie Taupin as their manager decided to convince a bunch of artists to cover their back catalogue in celebration of their achievements. For some reason, this charted on both the main and compilation charts on ARIA, meaning that it's hard to say how big it was according to ARIA (it was only a modest success on AMR.)

You know that chart positions meant nothing even this close towards the 21st century when this compilation album managed to make the yearend list (for AMR of course) over several entries we've looked at on this list. It's easy to see why it was a sleeper hit given how it contains several remixes of popular tracks from the EDM genre during the height of its popularity.

Peak position #2

This was another successful entry from the 100% series, this time it overlooked the biggest hits of spring of 1992 which allowed it to be a huge hit for 1992 and 1993 due to how long it lasted on our charts.

Well, this was a surprise, the Smash hits series was established in the mid to late 80's to look over the biggest hits of a given year in Australia. It made a remarkable comeback this year after struggling to find an audience in the 90's, proving that the yearly recap albums can be very lucrative in the right setting.

Given how artists on labels owned by EMI and Warner music made up the track listings for the 100% series, it only seems natural that their main rivals were albums that had artists from labels owned by Universal and Sony. This album was a success in that category but should also give you an idea the type of music we Aussies liked based on who was on what label. This was the big hits from the summer of 92/93 for the record.

This was the second last compulation album to chart on ARIA's main charts, it was noticeably more success on there than on the AMR charts meaning that had ARIA not pawned off these albums onto their own charts they likely would've dominated their main charts throughout the 90's. Oh and this album proves that the summer of 88/89 was a hectic time in the Australian music scene.

There were many music programs in Australia over the years, one of the more popular ones albeit only for a little while was Ground zero which I guess was meant to be the 90's equivalent of Bandstand and Countdown as it was a hybrid of having live performances and showing music videos. The show was such a success in season one that a CD was released containing tracks that were performed live on the show.

For the second year in a row, the Hit machine franchise played second fiddle to the 100% hits franchise, this won't be the case the following year where it was the inverse of what happened this year, however it's worth noting that both franchises were still plenty successful regardless of which one we're looking at.

Autumn of 1989 was a hectic time in the Australian music scene if this album is anything to go by, rather than repeat myself on this entry like I do with each of these releases, I'll bring up that this was the last compilation album to chart on ARIA before they were moved to their own charts, so this being a success is based on how well it did on the AMR charts.

While this wasn't a seasonal compilation, it feels like one given how it managed to collect a bunch of huge hits from the start of the year (OK only three of them were huge but you get my point.) As such it managed to make the yearend for AMR over two other seasonal compilations.

Well, you better believe that the 100% hits series would also have a highly successful annual album to compete with the Smash hit's franchise, I guess the takeaway here is that 1992 was seen as an excellent year for music according to the Australian public of the time.

Named after the Red hot chili peppers of all things, this is a remix album consisting of remixes of popular dance tracks from the late 80's and early 90's. It was a decent success here in Australia, although nowhere near as popular as you'd think considering our love for dance music in the 90's.

Named after the Sinead O'Connor classic, this album successfully collects all of the biggest hits of 1990 which it turns out wasn't much of an incentive for us Aussies to make it a huge success, at least not enough to make a yearend list which I'm ignoring to allow it to appear on here anyway.

It's a bit of a mystery why this wasn't inescapable here considering how this was meant to be a celebration of Australian music from the early 70's to the early 90's (when this was released.) I guess in a way, this album was the death note that killed the local music scene as it's technically a greatest hits package of our local scene.

You may have noticed a lack of presence of these themed compilation albums on these lists, suffice to say that they didn't bring in the numbers throughout the 90's that they did in the 80's even though they were being produced right up until the streaming era. This is one of the lucky few non seasonal compilations to find success this decade due to it being a double album containing nearly forty rock tracks throughout the twentieth century.

This was the second entry in the Wild FM series, it's the final entry on this list that made a yearend list even though it like the previous entry had a rather low peak position on the AMR charts. This is further proof that chart positions didn't mean much during the late 90's given how much competition there was to choose from.

Peak position #2

We have a new entry when it comes to a long line of compilation albums, here we have the first Wild FM album which is a series of albums that took popular tracks of the moment and remixed each of them for the releases. The series had a bit of a slow start to it as it wouldn't really take off down under until the following year.

Peak position #3

This was the final entry from the Can't beat the music series, there was one more compilation album this year after this entry which was such a failure that it made people wonder if 100% hits would be the definitive franchise for these seasonal compilations.

The Sydney gay and lesbian Mardi gras have been an annual tradition since the late 70's (although it initially began as a protest for LGBT rights) the organises decided to cash in off the event in 1995 by compiling a bunch of songs used in the parade for that year which allowed it to become a moderate success.

Peak position #1x5

Well, this is something else, apparently the Grammy award nominations were so stacked this year that their second album they released to promote the nominees was a huge success in Australia this year. This was the only album from the Grammys to ever be a success here (at least as far as I can tell) which makes this a strange phenomenon indeed.

Peak position #1x5

Hot metal was a TV series that ran from 1986 to 1989, the company decided to release a compilation album featuring some of the biggest names in alternative rock just as the show was coming to an end which unsurprisingly became a success here in Australia just as the decade was coming to an end.

Another themed album for this list, this time it's a collection of love songs that was initially released in the UK a year prior to it seeing the light of day here in Australia. It was a decent success here likely due to how sentimental we had become when it came out.

Peak position #2

This was the third entry in the Tour of duty franchise, I'm including it here as for whatever reason, these were considered compilation albums back in the day given how the fourth entry appeared on the compilation charts and not on ARIA's main charts.

Peak position #3

This is a sequel to the first Premiere collection from Anderew Lloyd Webber, it only charts on the compilation charts on ARIA despite the first entry charting on the main charts even after the compilation charts launched in 1989.

Peak position #3

I guess is only makes sense that there would be a remix album that attached itself to the Hit machine series superficially around the time there was one of these albums that did the same to the 100% series.

Peak position #3

It appears 80's nostalgia had begun less than a decade after it came to an end here in Australia as we have this compilation album containing some of the biggest hits of that decade, although it's worth noting that it contains few songs that actually topped our charts making it a bit of a misleading album

This is the final Grammy album to find success here in Australia as the novelty of discovering new music via these albums had worn off by the fourth entry, admittedly I'm more stunned that these were a success to begin with given how much of an obvious cash grab they were.

Peak position #1x5

This is another album I'll be featuring on this site that by all accounts shouldn't qualify for this list as it failed to appear on the AMR year end charts, however I'm allowing it because I want to include every seasonal compilation on this site since the early 80's to compare and contrast how well they all did with each other.

Hit singles

The globe #8
Justified and ancient #3

From what I can gather, this album has nothing to do with the 100% series outside of aping the name of that series, as such it managed to piggyback off its success by offering up a bunch of remixes of the (then) recent dance hits of the day.
