80's Compilation albums

I've decided to feature every compilation album that became a success here in Australia throughout the 80's, this is more to showcase how inescapable these albums were this decade even compared to the 90's as naturally I won't be including every album that charted on our album charts. Also, for a bit of trivia, 1984 has the most representation on this list with a whipping sixteen entries appearing on the year end list for that year.

This was the most successful compilation album of the 80's in Australia, it was beaten out by those Triple J albums in the 90's (going by the AMR charts of course) but this was during the height of the popularity of seasonal compilations here in Australia. This overlooks the popular songs of spring of 1984 which allowed it to peak during the Christmas season of that year and well into this year.

It appears that we Aussies had a love for TV themes during the midpoint of the decade, as such we have this compilation album becoming a modest success here in lieu of some of the seasonal compilations released this year.

Peak position #7

This is the earliest compilation album I'll be featuring on this site; they were a lucrative collection of albums which overlook the most popular songs of a season here in Australia. This one in particular gathers most of the biggest hits of 1980 during spring which explains why it was a success during our summer period.

OK I know I'm reusing the album art for the first volume of this series, but I looked very hard for the proper art and couldn't find it anywhere on the internet. What I do know is that the second volume of this series was an even bigger success here in Australis proving how lucrative classical music had become by the midpoint of the decade amongst us Aussies.

Peak position #15

This was a moderate success during out winter here given how hectic our music scene was during the autumn, as such it led to the success of the earlier entries on this list as well as these albums dominating our album chart for the 80's and (at least on the AMR charts) 90's.

There was a British equivalent of this album that was released during the summer period of 83/84 (as such it won't be appearing on this list) so naturally we have a compilation album looking over the biggest hits of the biggest names in American music here in Australia up until this point in time.

Peak position #3

This album was able to collect some of the biggest hits of autumn of this year, it wasn't as successful as the other entry on this list that does this, but the selection of music on here was decent enough for it to be a success regardless.

This was a compilation album which collects all of the biggest Bond themes at the time of its release, I'm guessing it was a success here in Australia due to the (then) recent success of the latest Bond theme from Sheena Easton this year.

Peak position #10

I've decided to make an exception with this entry as it wouldn't have made the list if I restricted it to albums that appear on the ARIA and AMR year end charts, it goes to show you how weak the selections for the spring of 1989 this album made were in retrospect.

From what I can gather, this was a remix album which grouped together a bunch of popular tracks of the day and gave them the remix treatment for breakdancing which had taken the world by storm around this time. Think of it as the Wild FM of its day if there was only one volume (that I'm aware of.)

Peak position #12

Given how breakdancing had become a cultural phenomenon throughout the decade, it only seems natural that there would be a compilation album based around the craze that would become a success here in Australia.

If you're a fan of the mid 80's like I am, then this is the album for you as it manages to collect a vast majority of songs that made it big during this time period which sadly didn't do it many favours back in the day given how low it appears on this list.

From what I can gather, this is a compilation album built around collecting all of the best rock and roll hits from the mid 50's up until this point in time which of course was a modest success here in Australia upon its initial release.

Peak position #9

This is a bit of an odd entry since David Kent decided to count this separately from the main album from earlier on this list, I guess this was a slow year for compilation albums and as such, he felt it was worth separating a remix album from the main release.

Peak position #9

This was a compilation album based on classical music, it figures this would be a success due to the rise in popularity of classical music this decade thanks to the likes of Richard Clayderman and the Royal philharmonic orchestra.

Peak position #12

Even though the title of this compilation suggests this is a dance rap collection, it's actually a remix album that takes popular dance tracks of the moment (some of which do have some rapping here and there) and gives them remixes for the dancefloor of the day. It's another entry I would categorise as a Wild FM release years prior to when that series first launched.

Peak position #13

I guess we Aussies really had nostalgia for the 50's this year given how this managed to make the cut for this list.

Peak position #10

I guess we Aussies really had nostalgia for the 60's this year given how this managed to make the cut for this list.

Peak position #11

This wasn't very popular due to the lack of noticeable hit singles it collected for the winter of this year; however, it did have a couple of decently big hits which is what helped it find an audience.

We have another compilation album to look at on this list, this time it's one that looks over the biggest hits of the 70's here in Australia not even five years after that decade came to an end.

Peak position #8

This is the first compilation album to find success since the midpoint of the 70's, I guess the transition from the 70's to the 80's was a momentous enough event that the general public of Australia decided to mass buy this album collecting all the biggest hits from that time period.

From what I can gather, this is a five L.P compilation which true to the name of the compilation, is a collection of rock tracks that had made it big in the (at the time) thirty years since it first hit the mainstream in the mid 50's. It's little surprise it was a success this year and likely would've been even bigger if there wasn't so much stiff competition from the other compilation albums.

Peak position #12

This was a compilation album which collects many country classics from the twentieth century, it was a decent success here in Australia likely due to nostalgia we Aussies had for the genre as it was getting pushed aside around this time in favour of every other entry on this list.

Peak position #19

This is a remix album consisting of soul numbers of the moment receiving the dance remix treatment, it was a moderate success here in Australia likely due to our apathy towards soul and sophistopop around this time as well as our love of dance music.

Peak position #12

Although this didn't quite reach the upper echelons of our charts like most of these themed compilation albums from back in the day did, it made up for that by sticking around our charts for quite sometime likely due to the idea of having an album themed around love rocks in the rock genre being quite the winner for audiences back in the day.
