Australian albums of 2010

I’ve decided to rank each album that appeared on the ARIA top 50 for this year based on how well they did on my albums of the 2010’s list from last year, although I should point out that I’ve included albums on this list that were a hit earlier in the decade to show just how reductive the year end lists and indeed the ARIA charts had become throughout the decade here in Australia.

This album from 2008 lasted long enough into this decade to qualify for this list, although it admittedly went away by the end of 2010 as this was back when people still bought albums rather than streaming them nonstop.

Hit singles

So what #1
Sober #6
Please don't leave me #11
Bad influence #6
Funhouse #6
I don't believe you #23

This is another album that refused to die on our charts, as such, I've only included the success it had on its initial release as otherwise this debut album from Bruno Mars would have to be updated every few months to accommodate its success on this list.

Peak position #2

(#3 digital, #3 physical)

Hit singles

Just the way you are #1
Grenade #1
The lazy song #6
Marry you #8
Count on me #19

This is the second and final album released in 2008 to feature on this list, although admittedly this only barely made the cut much like P!nk's entry from earlier due to how much of a shelf life it had over here during the final year of the 00's.

Peak position #2

Hit singles

Love story #1
White horse #41
You belong with me #5
Fifteen #48

This is one of the very few alternative albums to make it big this decade as the 2010's seemed to have an allergic reaction to artists not from major labels outside of the pop sphere, it was a huge victory for Angus and Julia Stone following the buzz they had from their debut album in 2007 which set them up for massive success this decade thanks to heavy promotion on Triple J.

Hit singles

And the boys #44
Big jet plane #21

This is another album I've already featured on this site; indeed, it seemed like Lily Allen would be the future for music in the 2010's even if she hinted that this would be her last album (it wasn't.)

Peak position #1x3

(#2 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

The fear #3
Fuck you #23
Not fair #3
22 #12

This was such a massive success upon its initial release worldwide that naturally its success spilled into the new decade, as such it manages to make an appearance on this list for BEP, reminding us that they were pipped for great things throughout the decade.

Peak position #1x3

(#3 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Boom boom pow #1
I gotta feeling #1
Meet me halfway #1
Rock that body #8
Imma be #7

This is one of only two albums to spawn five Billboard chart toppers in existence, the other was Bad from MJ which achieved that due to the 80's having a different chart topper every other week which wasn't the case in the 2010's.

Peak position #1x2

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

California gurls #1
Teenage dream #2
Firework #3
E.T #5
Last Friday night #5
The one that got away #27

This was one of the last albums to be released in the 00's that qualified for my 2009 list, naturally it would see most of its success the following year which makes it more than eligible for this list.

Peak position #1x6

(#2 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Haven't met you yet #9

Well, this was one of the last albums to be released in the 00's, so naturally it was a shoe in for this list given how it achieved most of its success at the start of this decade.

Peak position #1x3

(#3 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Bad romance #2
Telephone #3
Alejandro #2
Dance in the dark #24

This was released in 2009 to deafening silence worldwide, likely because it lacked that mainstream crossover single that many other indie bands and artists usually have that allow them to have a massive hit from the indie sphere. It eventually spawned a hit for them worldwide which allowed this to be one of the first albums to be a massive success this decade that wasn't already in the 00's.

Peak position #3

(#1 digital, #3 physical)

Hit singles

You've got the love #9

Well, this album did rebound on our charts at the start of the decade due to how much listeners of Triple J loved it, as such it shouldn't come as a surprise that it makes a reappearance on this list thanks to how much of its success it achieved this decade compared to its initial release down under.

Peak position #1x3

(#1 digital, #2 physical)

Hit singles

Little lion man #3
The cave #32

This was the first two albums from JB that he released as a two for one deal, as such, it became a massive success for him at the start of the decade much to the chagrin of everyone who wasn't a part of his target audience.

Peak position #1x2

(#2 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

One time #23
Baby #3
Eenie meenie #11
Never say never #17
Somebody to love #20

This was a massive hit for Kesha at the start of the decade, mainly for how many singles it managed to spawn on the charts as this was big enough to put her in the same leagues as Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. For whatever reason, her second album was a massive flop for her a mere two years after this came out.

Peak position #4

(#1 digital, #5 physical)

Hit singles

Tik tok #1
Blah blah blah #3
Your love is my drug #3
Take it off #4

Although Good girl gone bad was the biggest hit of Rihanna's career here in Australia, this comes in a close second due to spawning multiple singles that were inescapable throughout the world during the early stretch of the decade.

Peak position #2

(#2 digital, #2 physical)

Hit singles

Only girl #1
What's my name #18
S&M #1
California king bed #4
Cheers #6

This was one of the last albums to be released in the 00's, this means that it managed to achieve most of its success at the start of the decade proving that Susan Boyle was a household name and that the internet could make any average person an overnight sensation thanks to viral clips.

Peak position #1x11

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

This was a return to form for Eminem given how this was more positively received than his previous two albums, it doesn't quite live up to his early material but is a sign that he was back on his A-game which revitalised his career for the 2010's.

Peak position #1x9

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Not afraid #4
Love the way you lie #1
No love #21

This greatest hits package became a massive success multiple times throughout the decade here in Australia, had I bundled all of its success together, it easily would've been the most successful greatest hits album of the decade and arguably of all time.

Peak position #1x13

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Raise your glass #1
Fucking perfect #10

Even though these guys haven't had any success with their original material since 2005, the nostalgic love that Bon Jovi have had over the years has allowed this to be a massive success for them upon its initial release as well as it being another album that keeps charting since its release.

Peak position #1x1

(#1 digital, #2 physical)

Birds of Tokyo is another rare rock band to find success in the 2010's here in Australia, particularly with their third album which remains their biggest in their catalogue likely due to the lead single becoming their first genuine hit over here thanks to heavy endorsement on Triple J.

Peak position #2

(#1 digital, #2 physical)

Hit singles

Plans #11
Wild at heart #50

This was a breakup album from Usher that initially struggled for success due to audiences tapping out from his music at the start of the decade, however it was given a second chance when the third single (at least from his native America) took off worldwide which allowed it to crossover internationally for the RNB singer. It's true success came from the deluxe edition and its singles here in Australia.

Peak position #2

(#3 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

OMG #1
DJ got us falling in love #3
More #7

This is the final album from KD Lang to find any success here in Australia, mainly because the greatest hits package was released at the very start of the decade which means it rebounded during its chart run when it was considered the perfect Mother's Day gift.

Peak position #1x3

(#1 physical)

Hit singles

Hallelujah #13

Although this album was a hit for Muse upon its initial release for Muse at the end of the 00's, its true peak in popularity didn't occur until the start of the decade when the singles were ranked high on Triple J's list of the best songs of 2009 which made this a shoe in for this list of mine.

Peak position #1x1

(#3 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Uprising #23
Undisclosed desires #11

I did mention on my 2009 list that this had more of its success this decade than it did in the 00's, as such it became a shoe in for this list since it kick started the club boom that permeated for the first half of the decade.

Peak position #4

(#4 digital, #4 physical)

Hit singles

When love takes over #6
Sexy bitch #1
One love #36
Memories #3
Getting over you #5

Well, this was released quite late in the 00's, naturally it would find most of its success this decade which ensured that it would have its place on this list.

Peak position #1x1

Wheels #21

This was the debut album for Jason Derulo, it was a massive success at the start of the decade thanks to it spawning multiple hit singles for the RNB singer. His other albums did see minor success here in Australia throughout the decade, however they didn't leave enough of an impact to appear on this list.

Peak position #4

Hit singles

Whatcha say #5
In my head #1
Riding solo #4
What if #32
The sky's the limit #22

This was released rather late in 2009, this allowed it to retain its popularity going into the 2010's which in turn allowed it a placement on this list of mine.

Peak position #3

Hit singles

Don't stop believing #5
Sweet Caroline #37
Take a bow #38

James Blunt was on a winning streak with his third album from the start of the decade worldwide, this is further proof that he wasn't a one hit wonder with "You're beautiful" internationally like he was over in America. He still has one more album to appear on this list, further proving the popularity of his catalogue.

Peak position #5

(#6 digital, #6 physical)

Stay the night #10

I did mention this was more of a success in 2010 than it was upon its initial release for Temper trap, here we are with their debut album which became a worldwide smash thanks to the surprise success "Sweet disposition" had in the UK at the start of the decade.

Peak position #9

(#4 digital)

Hit singles

Love lost #42
Fader #47
Sweet disposition #14

OK I guess the Kings of Leon did manage to achieve some success with their fifth album at the start of the decade, I guess when you had an album as inescapable as their fourth one from 2008, you're not going to fade into obscurity as quickly as many of their contemporaries from the end of the 00's.

Peak position #1x2

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Radioactive #19

Named after the year this album was released (which is also the name of an LGBT organisation here in Australia) this greatest hits album was released at the start of the decade by Guy Sebastian to massive success given how popular he was throughout the 00's here in Australia.

Peak position #4

(#10 digital, #4 physical)

Hit singles

Who's that girl #1

Although this album was widely panned by critics upon its initial release and its success was a fraction of what their earlier entry on this list achieved, this still managed to make the cut for this list proving how little competition there was for the albums on here throughout the decade.

Peak position #8

(#3 digital, #8 physical)

Hit singles

The time #1
Just can't get enough #3
Don't stop the party #16

This is another album that is a contender for my comeback list, mainly because the world had given up on Train by the time they released this album at the start of the decade only to welcome them back with open arms due to how inescapably popular the lead single was for them.

Peak position #8

Hit singles

Hey soul sister #1

Glee was so inescapable during the first stretch of the decade that the first five entries from their lucrative soundtrack franchise will be appearing on this list, this was the most successful out of the franchise due to it having the most popular collection of covers that appear on the show.

Peak position #3

Billionaire #34
Empire state of mind #20
Forget you #24
Just the way you are #47
Marry you #27
River deep montain high #44
Teenage dream #24
Toxic #37

This is the final appearance from Taylor Swift on this list, although considering I've included all of her albums barring her debut prior to 2020 on this list, it goes without saying that she was inescapable this decade given how time has largely left this album into obscurity outside her diehard fanbase.

Peak position #1x1

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

Mine #9
Speak now #20
Back to December #26
Mean #45

This is the final album that Powderfinger released before they went their separate ways at the start of the 10's, they agreed this would be their final album regardless of success given how Bernard Fanning wanted to pursue his solo career which didn't reach the dizzying heights of success of his debut album or his bands work throughout the 00's.

Peak position #1x1

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

All of the dreamers #23
Burn your name #45

Glee really felt like a force to be reckoned with during the first stretch of the decade, this third entry into their music catalogue being a massive success for the fictional group.

Peak position #1x2

Hit singles

Gives you hell #47
Total eclipse of the heart #28

It was only inevitable that there would be rivals to Hilltop Hoods here in Australia, enter the male equivalent of Salt N Pepa as we have two rappers and a DJ who found massive success with this album at the start of the decade.

Peak position #1x1

(#1 digital, #2 physical)

Hit singles

Down by the river #45
Addicted #38

This is the only solo album that Slash released in his catalogue, mainly because every album he would release after this would be with Myles Kennedy, none of which found the level of success that this album did for the former Guns N Roses guitarist.

Peak position #3

(#1 digital, #3 physical)

This is the only album to find success from Meagan Washington, an Australian indie singer/songwriter who was pipped for great things this decade due to this being heavily promoted by Triple J but was sidelined as the decade went on as were so many other artists who weren't A-list celebrities this decade.

Peak position #3

(#2 digital, #3 physical)

This was far less successful than the first volume from the end of the 00's for Glee here in Australia, I guess it didn't have a genuine hit like that album did which had it suffer in the rankings back in the day.

Peak position #8

(#1 digital, #8 physical)

Hit singles

True colours #47

This took quite a while to take off here in Australia, heck it didn't even begin to chart until the start of the decade as opposed to late 2009 when it was initially released for the American idol contestant. It eventually found its audience amongst us Aussies when the third single became a massive hit for him here.

Peak position #5

(#4 physical)

Hit singles

For your entertainment #32
Whataya want from me #4
If I had you #4

This is the second successful album that Susan Boyle released in her catalogue, this and an entry coming up in a bit was proof that while her popularity was fleeting, she had somewhat of a dedicated fanbase following the success of her earlier entry on this list.

Peak position #2

(#1 physical)

This is the victory album for Altiyan Childs, the second winner of X factor Australia following a revival of the series since its 2005 season. Naturally, he went on to have no further success after his victory on the show.

Peak position #3

(#3 digital, #3 physical)

Hit singles

Somewhere in the world #8

This is an album Ronan Keating released exclusively in the southern hemisphere, mainly because it was a duets album where he duetted with some of the biggest names in music from the music scenes of Australia and NZ. Naturally this proved to be more successful in NZ due to the kiwis recognising every name on the album as opposed to us Aussies.

Peak position #3

(#3 physical)

This was a massive success for John Butler Trio at the start of the decade like I said on their earlier entry on this list, it's low placement on this list is once again due to having most of its chart run in the lower half of our charts to allow several flashes in the pan releases to chart high upon their release and then fall off the charts completely.

Peak position #1x1

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

One way road #15
Close to you #38
Revolution #34

This is the final successful album from Linkin Park, granted this wasn't from a lack of trying which would eventually lead to the band's downfall later in the decade, however this concept album proved to be very divisive towards the band's fanbase resulting in its lack of success compared to their earlier albums.

Peak position #1x4

(#1 digital, #1 physical)

Hit singles

The catalyst #33
Iridescent #39

This is the only other album to come from the Marvel franchise, although it's really more of an AC/DC album that they donated to the franchise similar to what they did with their 1986 effort Who made who as they gave that to the Stephen King flick Maximum overdrive.

Peak position #2

(#2 physical)

This is the final album from Jack Johnson to find any sort of success anywhere in the world, mainly because it was released at the start of the decade where 00's artists could still achieve some level of success before being replaced with many of the artists on this list.
