Australian albums of 2009

The final year of the first decade of the new millennium, it was where the club boom officially began which technically makes this the first year of the 2010's in the music scene given how late in the decade this trend launched.

If we were going purely by chart runs, this was the biggest album of the decade in Australia due to how it seemed like this would never leave our charts from its initial release. It was a huge comeback for P!nk following the commercial disappointment of her third album Try this which suggested that her time in the spotlight would come to an end in 2004. That obviously wasn't the case as she's still going strong to this day.

P!nk was on a roll with her fifth album as it retained the popularity of her fourth album right to the end of the decade worldwide as well as being a massive worldwide success in its own right. It's also a project that saved her marriage despite it being a breakup album given the problems her and her husband was going through during its production, however they patched things up prior to its release.

While this wasn't her debut album (that honour goes to her self-titled from 2006) this was the album which made Taylor Swift into an international superstar thanks to its theme of her being a Disney princess which connected with the teenage girls of the world back when no one had an issue with the Disney princess brand. It led to her becoming the biggest pop star in the world the following decade.

This had more of an immediate success for Lady Gaga internationally than it did in her native America, similar to her obvious influence Madonna who only found success in her homeland once the rest of the world made her a household name in the 80's. The similarities between the two pop divas led to them being compared with over the years, although Madonna certainly grew tired of these comparisons rather quickly.

Although her debut album did decently well in Australia earlier in the decade, it wasn't the juggernaut like her second album was which spawned multiple hit singles here and in her native UK just as the decade was coming to an end. Despite being compared to P!nk during the 00's, her popularity didn't translate to the 2010's likely due to her failing to crossover to America like some of her other fellow Brits.

The acronym for this album is "the energy never dies," this seemed to be the case for the quartet when they released their third album together given how it seemed like their party jams weren't going to die going into the 2010's thanks to how inescapable they were. Of course, their time in the spotlight did eventually die out when they released their next album which was critically panned for being lazy and repetitive.

There didn't seem to be any signs of Michael Bublé slowing down in the mainstream as this was his fourth album in a row to achieve massive worldwide success for him, in fact this was so popular that it even spawned a genuine hit for the Canadian crooner in the form of its lead single which is something none of his other albums have done in his catalogue.

Although she found success with her albums prior to this release, it wasn't until this album from her alter ego Sasha fierce that Beyonce's albums became a household name for her worldwide (I don't want to look over the popular albums of the 2010's, trust me, you don't want me to.) The album has been widely criticised for being misandrist, obviously it was her way of responding to albums from the likes of Eminem and 50 cent with reverse sexism.

This was originally meant to be an E.P that Lady Gaga released to cash in off the success of her earlier entry on this list, however she decided to bundle that album with said E.P which resulted in it becoming a massive success for her just as the decade was coming to an end. Naturally it was more of a hit throughout the 2010's due to how late it was released this year.

This was a band that was pipped for great things going into the 2010's given how inescapably popular their debut album was, alas they were a rock group (well more an EDM group with rock elements to them) so this album was their only success here given how rock music was unfairly shunned once the new decade rolled around. Still at least Triple J loves them to this day given how well promoted they are on there.

It goes to show that rock music was still inescapable in the mainstream even when the decade was coming to an end, it's a pity its popularity would all but disappear going into the 2010's given how the club boom took over all aspects of the mainstream that decade. Here we have one of the last rock albums to be inescapable which came from Kings of Leon thanks to their anthemic tracks on the album.

Although this was a moderate success for Mumford and Sons this year, its true success came the following year when the lead single was crowned the best of the year according to listeners of Triple J which allowed it and the album to rebound on our charts. This ushered in a new wave of alternative music that did quite well on our charts throughout the 2010's at the expense of traditional rock and roll.

Many consider this to be the final decent album to come from Coldplay given how their fans from the 00's have felt that their 2010's material doesn't hold up to what they released this decade, they're kind of like the British equivalent of Maroon 5 in that regard (right down to me never being a fan of either group.) In any case, this was the album which finally broke them through over in America given how big its title track was.

Given how Paul Potts made headline news when he won Britain's got talent in 2007, it only makes sense that his female equivalent would do the same two years later even if she somehow lost on her season to some dance troupe that faded into obscurity once the competition was over. Indeed, this was only the first of three massive albums she released which found massive success worldwide.

Regardless of what your opinions are on the Twilight saga (I haven't seen any of it, nor do I plan on doing so) there's no denying that the soundtracks are at least well received given that they largely consist of alternative rock to fit in with the themes of the franchise. The first soundtrack in particular is what launched the popularity of Paramore internationally due to their theme song becoming a massive hit for them.

This debut album form Duffy was a hit twice in Australia, the first time was upon its initial release whilst the second was a year after its release for reasons I can't seem to deduce as it's not like any of the singles were used in anything throughout 2009 here. I'd say Duffy would've been the British voice of the 2010's had Adele not stolen her crown with her second album 21 early in that decade.

Peak position #6

Mercy #26

This was the only successful album to come from MGMT, it was their debut album and one that promised them a healthy run in the 2010's that didn't come to be due to rock music being blacklisted in the mainstream of music in favour of the club boom. Still, they had acquired a healthy fanbase with this album likely due to the psychedelic imagery in their videos as well as Triple J heavily promoting them.

The last time that these guys bothered the charts was at the start of the decade, so to see them back in the spotlight nearly ten years later was a bit of a surprise to say the least. This didn't spawn any hit singles for the band, however considering their existence was pushing forty years at this point, the fact they were able to have a bestselling album was impressive in of itself.

Peak position #1x1

This was originally released earlier in the decade as a part of Sony's lucrative Essential collections, it was only a modest success back in the day due to these being little more than albums to assist modern audiences in finding out where to start their journey of becoming fans of the artists in question. It became a massive hit this year thanks to MJ's untimely death and everyone celebrating his life achievements.

Peak position #1x7

This was another album that only became a success thanks to the singles performing well on the Triple J year end list, as such it allowed both the singles and the album to be a massive success for the Australian duo Empire of the sun which helped them become a mainstream success just as the decade was coming to an end. They remain a one album wonder due to the 2010's being unkind to them like other rock bands from this list.

Jason Mraz was a no name outside his native America prior to releasing this breakthrough album of his, or more specifically, when the lead single finally became a massive success for him which led many to accuse him of becoming like Jack Johnson or James Blunt with this album. It remains his only successful album outside of America even though he's seen sound success over the years since this came out in his homeland.

These guys had been finding more and more success with each album this decade, the peak of their popularity coming when this album became a massive success in the 2010's due to it finally spawning them a hit in the form of its second single here in Australia. Even as early as 2010, it was a rare victory for a rock track even if the band has Triple J to thank for its popularity down under.

While their popular had begun to dwindle by this point in time (thanks largely to the internet) Nickelback were still widely successful worldwide with this album proving that it would take the death of rock in general for them to be seen as yesterday's news in the mainstream. Even when that happened in the new decade, their next album was still a modest success, proving that wasn't even enough to kill their popularity.

While I've never been a fan of the show, I have seen a few episodes of Hannah Montana and remember thinking they were OK for what they were, basically a teenage girl leading a double life of an ordinary high schooler and a worldwide pop star. The film on the other hand looks absolutely terrible which of course didn't prevent it from being a massive commercial success as was the soundtrack (it was likely that Taylor Swift cameo.)

This is another album that saw most of its success in the following decade (this fact didn't impact its ranking on this list) even so it was an instant hit upon its initial release thanks to the big names that David Guetta managed to convince to collaborate with him, making this feel like more of a compilation album than a studio release.

There were no signs of Foo Fighters slowing down exiting the decade here in Australia, so much so that they were one of the few rock bands to retain their popularity throughout the 2010's largely thanks to the success of this greatest hits package they released as the 00's was coming to an end.

Even though there was a reissue of this album from the previous year that found success for the king of pop, fans made the original version of the album a success once he tragically passed away this year proving how much of a timeless classic it was seen as at the time over the reissue.

This is the second solo album to come from Rob Thomas, it wasn't quite as successful as his earlier entry due to it getting lost in the shuffle with all of the commotion that was happening this year, but it was a massive success regardless and proof that he was all set for a successful run in the 2010's. Indeed, his final album with Matchbox 20 would be a massive success despite the mainstream's adversion towards rock music.

This was more of a success the following year; however, it was a modest hit upon its initial release which makes it qualify for this list even if it's considered to be more of a 2010's release. This was mainly because its success didn't take off until "Sweet disposition" became a surprise hit in the UK as the decade was coming to an end, which in turn fuelled the success of his album back here for Temper trap.

This was the album which introduced the world to Katy Perry, an artist that would become very divisive upon its initial release for a multitude of reasons that I won't list on here as few if any of them paint her in a positive light. Instead, I'll bring up why it was successful as though it does have its songs that even back then were meant to be seen as offensive, the rest of the album is a harmless pop jam that was adored by the general public.

This was one of the bigger sleeper hits of the year thanks to it becoming a hit twice during its chart run, the first was when the third single became a surprise hit in Australia and the second was when the deluxe edition came out which spawned a second minor hit for the trio on our charts. They would be one of the few rock bands (well more pop rock in this case) to find success throughout the 2010's.

This was released the previous year to deafening silence for Kate Miller, likely because it was deemed too quirky for the mainstream and also wasn't promoted on Triple J due to her being on a major label. It was given a second chance when one of the singles was chosen as the bumper theme to this year's season of Neighbours which in turn helped audiences check out what all the fuss was about on this album.

This is the final album that Powderfinger released before they went their separate ways at the start of the 10's, they agreed this would be their final album regardless of success given how Bernard Fanning wanted to pursue his solo career which didn't reach the dizzying heights of success of his debut album or his bands work throughout the 00's.

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu originally began his career as a member of Yothu Yindi from the early 90's, meaning he found success with them all the way back then with their breakthrough album as a vocalist and a multi-instrumentalist on the album, making him one of the first aboriginal (or first nations if you prefer) to find success in the Australian music scene. Fast forward seventeen years and he finally scored a hit with his first solo album.

This is the final successful album that the Killer's had in their career, again this was due to rock music taking a massive back seat to the likes of the club boom and indie pop going into the 2010's which sadly didn't have much room for the likes of these guys and many other bands on these last few lists of mine.

The title is a bit of a lie since nowhere in the world did all of the tracks become a chart topper for him, but honestly who cares when they remain bangers to this day?

This was the only notable success that indie pop darling Sarah Blasko was able to achieve in the mainstream, mainly because of how much love this album of hers received from Triple J which was a good source of alternative artists making it big in the mainstream throughout the decade down under. This was released the previous year to deafening silence, this is despite the fact that this greatest hits album was different depending on where in the world you're from in order to capitalise off of MJ's fiftieth birthday. It became a success this year the same reason why his other appearances did, the fact that he was no longer with us and people were celebrating his life's work.

I guess Robbie Williams managed to retain some of his popularity after the disaster that was Rudebox after all, this wasn't even his final successful album here as he would release a sequel to his 2001 effort in 2013 that did decently well over here that year.

This is the third throwback album that David Campbell released in the third consecutive year, it was technically a bigger hit than his previous two efforts, although it didn't chart as long on the upper echelons of our charts which is why it has a lower ranking on these lists than those two entries.

Well, the films might have been critically panned (as were the source material mind you) however at least the music was still well received which is perhaps why the soundtrack to the second film was a massive worldwide success for the franchise.

After a four-year hiatus, Eminem was back bigger than ever with his album which much like his previous effort, was panned by critics for being just as shocking and tasteless as Encore. It may surprise you to learn that these guys had at least one successful album prior to their big breakthrough in their native America Only by the night in Australia and NZ, this was that big album they had which of course was a success thanks to the band's popularity on Triple J both upon its initial release and when several of the singles appeared on their annual list for 2007.

This is the second project where Dave Grohl teams up with Josh Homme from the Queens of the stone age (Homme's band of course being the first) so naturally it was bound to be a success for them here in Australia just as the decade was coming to an end. They've yet to collaborate after this due to a multitude of scandals that have followed Josh over the years that caught up with him in the #metoo movement.

Peak position #4

This is an RNB album that comes from the Soul deep projects that Jimmy Barnes was making throughout his career, it proved to be a success because there's a dedicated fanbase to this type of music that the pub rocker makes throughout his career.

Peak position #1x2

While this album wasn't as popular as their previous effort from earlier in the decade, it made up for its comparatively lacklustre sales here in Australia by spawning the Fray's biggest hit in the form of its lead single which no doubt boosted its sales following that song's success here. One of the more critically acclaimed films of the decade was the Boat that rocked, a film that looks over the issues of radio piracy back in the 60's in the UK which resulted in the music industry facing a serious decline due to how much money the artists were losing from the practice. Naturally the film featured a who's who of 60's legends, which explains why it was a massive hit this year.

Much like John Farnham's entry from earlier on this list, this was also a success for Leonard Cohen proving how much we Aussies wanted these limited-edition entries of the Essential franchise from Sony.

Peak position #9

This was a moderate success during our Mother's Day season given how Andre Rieu became popular with that demographic following his big breakthrough he had the previous year.

Peak position #2

This is the only noticeable success that Australian band Little Birdy had here in Australia, I'm guessing this was due to heavy endorsement on Triple J even though it failed to spawn a single hit here like many other successful albums to gain its popularity through the radio station. Unsurprisingly, this breakthrough was brief as the band fell victim to the no rock zone that was the 2010's.

It may surprise you to learn that Flo Rida achieved some success with his albums here in Australia back in the day, although his first album from the previous year was more of a sleeper hit due to him coming off more as a novelty than a serious artist. His second album was more of an immediate success likely due to the lead single instantly becoming one of the biggest hits of the decade when it first came out.

This is an album that charted all throughout the decade here in Australia, however it was only this year that it charted long enough to qualify for one of these lists given that this was a rather slow year in music here in Australia. I'm guessing these guys being available on digital media for the first time encouraged fans to buy a physical copy of this album to justify their illegal downloads from earlier in the decade.

Given how she had come off a critically panned but highly successful theatrical adaptation of her TV series, Miley Cyrus decided to release and E.P that was geared towards a more adult audience compared to her earlier work but not too alienating to her fans that they would be completely befuddled by it (so basically like anything from the 2010's.)

This was the second album that Australian prog band Karnivool released in their catalogue, it was a decent success which is impressive given how few prog albums have been successful here since the early 80's. Their next album was also a decent success in 2013, a rare triumph for rock and roll given how few albums in that category found success here since this year.

Peak position #2

Given how their debut album became one of the most popular of the entire decade here in Australia, it's fitting that their sophomore album would also be a success even if it only achieved a fraction of the success of its predecessor. At least they were able to get the album released before the end of the decade as no doubt it would've been a complete dud had it been released in the 2010's.

This was a bit of a comeback for Guy Sebastian, at least when it comes to his presence on our singles chart given how this spawned his biggest hit in his career (at least chart wise) with the title track just as the decade was coming to an end.

Although they weren't able to recreate the success they had from the start of the decade (let alone from the 80's and 90's) it appears that there was still enough love for Bon Jovi exiting the 00's for this album to be a minor success here in Australia.

Peak position #4

I hope you're up for seeing a few albums that made it big throughout the decade appearing on this list once more as that was how the 00's ended throughout the world, this is the highest entry in this regard (technically the top entry is but I combined it with its original run) as P!nk was certainly on a roll this year thanks to her Funhouse tour.

Peak position #17

Although he didn't reach the dizzying heights he achieved in the 90's, it appears that we Aussies were interested in hearing a more traditional soul album from Seal around this time which is how it managed to become a minor sleeper hit years after his heyday had come to an end.

Peak position #16

Up until very recently, this was the final album from Vanessa Amorosi largely due to legal disputes which were resurrected much like how she fell off from earlier in the decade. This means that this is the second time in her career where her popularity came to an end due to circumstances outside of her control, although I doubt her latest material (as of this writing) will connect with audiences nowadays.

Given how they were back bigger than ever with their earlier entry on this list, it only makes sense that AC/DC would release an album containing previously unreleased material as well as a DVD tie in containing footage of their big hits that became a modest success right as the decade was coming to an end.

Peak position #16

Although Gossip had been active for well over a decade by the time they saw success with this album, it was due to the surprise success of its lead single that they were able to find an audience here in Australia and even in NZ with it. Unfortunately, fate didn't smile on them a second time moving into the 2010's, mainly because they were an alternative band at a time more interested in mainstream pop.

This was initially a flop for Ladyhawke upon its initial release, mainly because indie pop wasn't very commercially viable in the 00's and would only explode in popularity going into the 2010's. It eventually became a sleeper hit here when one of the singles heavily benefitted from placing high on Triple J's year end list for 2008 which propelled its popularity in the mainstream.

My delirium #8

You'd think that a collection of seven albums from one of the biggest names on the Australian charts would've been inescapable upon its initial release, sadly this was only barely a success for the 12th man likely due to his fans already owning the seven albums that come in this collection.

Peak position #17

This is the final album that Akon saw any success with worldwide, although once again it was more due to how prolific the singles were as while they were both sleeper hits here in Australia, they did far better internationally which of course translated to album success for him. It's likely his popularity died out due to the multiple controversies he was involved with during the height of his fame.

Hello again P!nk, it appears that there was no stopping you from having your entire catalogue rechart this year due to your highly lucrative world tour of your latest album you released. Even her debut album Can't take me home recharted this year, although it bombed this time due to it being an outlier in her catalogue.

Peak position #20

For whatever reason, this release from 2003 managed to become a minor sleeper hit here in Australia this year for Simon and Garfunkel. I'm not even sure why as it would've made more sense if this success came the following year as that was the fortieth anniversary of the duo's initial breakup.

Peak position #20

This was a massive flop for Kings of Leon when it first came out in 2004, I'm not sure why given how their second album from earlier on this list did fairly well upon its initial release three years later for the band. It was given a second chance when their top entry on this list became one of the biggest albums of the decade, prompting these other two albums to stick around the lower half of our charts.

Peak position #25

This is the only notable success that La roux had not just here in Australia but anywhere in the world including their native UK, even then it came from the success of its second single which took the world by storm thanks to how much it heavily reminded people of the mid to late 80's. The rest of the album is a throwback to that period in time, however it appears the world only had enough love for one of these tracks.

It looks like we have another Australian exclusive release from CCR as this greatest hits package becomes the latest in a long line of these releases from their label to find success here and nowhere else in the world. Admittedly this was more of a sleeper hit for the band given how it had to fight with a ton of other nostalgic released on this list alone, however it did chart high enough to receive proper representation from me.

OK so I'm throwing a curveball with this final entry on my list as this was obviously originally released three years prior for Lily Allen where it was a minor success for her here in Australia. ARIA does have this listed on their yearend list likely due to the success of her earlier entry on this list, however I feel this is more of them making up for failing to have this on their 2006 and 2007 lists than anything else.
