Australian albums of 2008

The internet really had its say for the music scene this year as we have plenty of memes and songs that otherwise wouldn't have had a prayer in finding success earlier in the decade appearing on this list.

If we were going purely by chart runs, this was the biggest album of the decade in Australia due to how it seemed like this would never leave our charts from its initial release. It was a huge comeback for P!nk following the commercial disappointment of her third album Try this which suggested that her time in the spotlight would come to an end in 2004. That obviously wasn't the case as she's still going strong to this day.

P!nk was on a roll with her fifth album as it retained the popularity of her fourth album right to the end of the decade worldwide as well as being a massive worldwide success in its own right. It's also a project that saved her marriage despite it being a breakup album given the problems her and her husband was going through during its production, however they patched things up prior to its release.

It took him a while to follow-up his solo debut, however once JT dropped his second album, it had confirmed him as the superstar of the decade given how inescapable the singles were as well as all of the critical acclaim it received. Whereas there was only a four-year gap between his debut and sophomore album, fans would have to wait for seven years before he released album number three.

This had more of an immediate success for Lady Gaga internationally than it did in her native America, similar to her obvious influence Madonna who only found success in her homeland once the rest of the world made her a household name in the 80's. The similarities between the two pop divas led to them being compared with over the years, although Madonna certainly grew tired of these comparisons rather quickly.

Although she found success with her albums prior to this release, it wasn't until this album from her alter ego Sasha fierce that Beyonce's albums became a household name for her worldwide (I don't want to look over the popular albums of the 2010's, trust me, you don't want me to.) The album has been widely criticised for being misandrist, obviously it was her way of responding to albums from the likes of Eminem and 50 cent with reverse sexism.

This was a massive success upon its initial release here in Australia, however its true popularity came with the deluxe edition which came out a year after its release and included some of the most iconic songs in her catalogue which added to already iconic classics the main album had. It remains her biggest album in her career, although some of her 2010's output do put up a decent challenge to that claim.

This was a band that was pipped for great things going into the 2010's given how inescapably popular their debut album was, alas they were a rock group (well more an EDM group with rock elements to them) so this album was their only success here given how rock music was unfairly shunned once the new decade rolled around. Still at least Triple J loves them to this day given how well promoted they are on there.

It goes to show that rock music was still inescapable in the mainstream even when the decade was coming to an end, it's a pity its popularity would all but disappear going into the 2010's given how the club boom took over all aspects of the mainstream that decade. Here we have one of the last rock albums to be inescapable which came from Kings of Leon thanks to their anthemic tracks on the album.

Well, if his (then) girlfriend could find international success with her album this year, why not Chris Brown with his second album? This solo outing from Fergie took its sweet time in becoming a success here in Australia, likely due to fans initially being put off by the first few singles as they seemed to suggest this was little more than a novelty album from the sole female member of BEP. Many consider this to be the final decent album to come from Coldplay given how their fans from the 00's have felt that their 2010's material doesn't hold up to what they released this decade, they're kind of like the British equivalent of Maroon 5 in that regard (right down to me never being a fan of either group.) In any case, this was the album which finally broke them through over in America given how big its title track was.

This was another easy hit for Michael Bublé in Australia back in the day, in fact the album even came back a year after its initial release given how it was released around Mother's Day which people quickly picked up on his biggest fanbase around the world. I'm guessing Matchbox 20 titled their greatest hits package this way due to them feeling like they were not welcome in the alternative scene throughout the decade, I guess there are enough scathing reviews of their albums from rock snobs to justify how they would feel this way especially given how inescapably popular they were throughout the decade both as a band and especially with Rob Thomas.

This was the second album from the Veronicas which was released during a time where all types of rock music were finding massive success worldwide, it was a predictable success for the duo here given the success of their previous album as well as it finally gaining them an international audience right when the decade was coming to an end. Regardless of what your opinions are on the Twilight saga (I haven't seen any of it, nor do I plan on doing so) there's no denying that the soundtracks are at least well received given that they largely consist of alternative rock to fit in with the themes of the franchise. The first soundtrack in particular is what launched the popularity of Paramore internationally due to their theme song becoming a massive hit for them.

This debut album form Duffy was a hit twice in Australia, the first time was upon its initial release whilst the second was a year after its release for reasons I can't seem to deduce as it's not like any of the singles were used in anything throughout 2009 here. I'd say Duffy would've been the British voice of the 2010's had Adele not stolen her crown with her second album 21 early in that decade.

Although the singles from this album from Mika were a massive hit here upon their respective initial releases, the album itself only became a sleeper hit thanks to each of them causing it to rebound on the charts whenever one of them was released as a single, hence its low placement on this list. Given how he was arguably the most in demand producer of the decade, it only makes sense that the producer would release an album of his own where he fronts the mic while his clientele provide him with catchy choruses to connect his verses together. This was the only successful album to come from MGMT, it was their debut album and one that promised them a healthy run in the 2010's that didn't come to be due to rock music being blacklisted in the mainstream of music in favour of the club boom. Still, they had acquired a healthy fanbase with this album likely due to the psychedelic imagery in their videos as well as Triple J heavily promoting them.

The last time that these guys bothered the charts was at the start of the decade, so to see them back in the spotlight nearly ten years later was a bit of a surprise to say the least. This didn't spawn any hit singles for the band, however considering their existence was pushing forty years at this point, the fact they were able to have a bestselling album was impressive in of itself.

Given how the lead single managed to become a massive worldwide hit, it only makes sense that this second album from Leona Lewis would follow suit and also be a massive hit outside of her native UK as opposed to her debut which was only a hit over there due to her winning the 2005 season of UK X factor. She would release her third album by the end of the decade; however, it was a massive worldwide flop.

One of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time is Mamma Mia, mainly due to the renditions of Abba's catalogue as many will tell you that its story is a bit jumbled even for a Broadway musical. The theatrical version made nine years after it first premiered was a commercial success despite a mixed critical reception due to the plot and also the song renditions not being as good as the stage version.

Following the success of the Kanye west track that sampled one of their more iconic songs, Daft punk were suddenly able to find massive worldwide success with this live album which was a sign of the return of their popularity even if they didn't release another album for another six years after this came out.

It had been a while since the Whitlams were a force to be reckoned with in our music scene, however that didn't mean that fans weren't ecstatic when they released a greatest hits package this year given that it was a massive success for the band a decade after their big breakthrough.

This will be the only album from Slipknot to appear on this site as it was the only album of theirs to find any sort of success in the southern hemisphere, their earlier work somehow didn't find much of a success here likely due to audiences finding their image too frightening to get into whilst their later work was released during rock and roll's exile from the mainstream throughout the 2010's.

This was originally released the previous year for free by Radioheaed, apparently for free which is why it didn't chart upon its initial release as it wasn't until the band secured a new contract that it finally became available in stores early this year, hence why it had strong enough first week sales to qualify for this list of mine.

Well love them or hate them, Hillsong has been a widely successful err.... community over the years which largely stems from the success of their albums which they've been releasing over the years since their inception, this being their most popular over they've released.

This is the only other appearance that Sneaky Sound System will be making on my site, it was far less successful than their debut album from the previous year likely due to lacking that huge runaway hit that album had despite it being an immediate success here upon its initial release. I guess we Aussies only had enough love for one album with these guys fusing EDM with disco back in the day.

True to what they called themselves, the Priests are an Irish trio of well.... priests who scored a massive hit with their debut album worldwide thanks to the novelty of having an opera album performed by members of the clergy. They proved to be an overnight sensation given how this album was a huge internationally success for them.

Gyroscope was one of the many Australian bands to truly benefit from the early digital era given how their earlier material failed to become a success here in a way that this album was for them. They even had the full endorsement of Triple J to help them find a more mainstream crowd, which again didn't work until this year when this album became a modest success for the rock band.

Following the success of their previous album, Snow patrol were able to achieve sound success with this follow up here in Australia that finally gave them a charting song given that digital downloads were finally incorporated onto our charts by this point in time. It may not have lived up to the dizzying heights of success of Eyes open, however it at least prevented the band from becoming a one album wonder here.

It looks like Jordin Sparks was the real deal when she won her season of American idol given how she was one of the rare contestants to find international success following her victory on the show, indeed she saw quite a bit of success here in Australia thanks to the singles from her debut being quite popular in our music scene.

This album had fifteen years' worth of hype that went into its release, so that alone ensured that it would be somewhat successful once it finally dropped this year even if critics and fans alike felt that the wait wasn't worth it. It had an infamous production cycle that meant that it was the most expensive album at the time of its release and even now is among the most expensive albums to ever be produced.

Given how Miley Cyrus was quickly becoming one of the biggest names in music worldwide, it makes sense that this live album from her Best of both worlds concert would be a moderate success here in Australia even if it was largely overshadowed by her earlier album on this list given they were released around the same time as each other.

Although he didn't reach the dizzying heights he achieved in the 90's, it appears that we Aussies were interested in hearing a more traditional soul album from Seal around this time which is how it managed to become a minor sleeper hit years after his heyday had come to an end.

This was originally released the previous year to minimal success for the brother and sister duo Angus and Julia stone, this is after Triple J gave the duo heavy promotion given how well they were received by its listeners. It gained somewhat of a second wind this year likely due to a successful tour they embarked on which of course led to great things going into the 2010's for them.

It made perfect sense for Christina Aguilera to release this greatest hits album when she did given how she was coming off the success of Back to basics, unfortunately it activated the greatest hits curse which means that she struggled for mainstream relevancy moving forward from this release.

Given how it took Dido five years to follow up her second album Life for rent with this release, it only makes sense that it would only barely be a success likely due to fans who were waiting patiently to see what else she had in store for them. Unsurprisingly, this meant that she wouldn't have any chance of finding success moving forward from here.

This recharted last year following the success of his earlier entry on this list, however it only appeared on ARIA's year end list for this year likely due to how much longer it lasted on our charts this year compared to last year.

Although he had success in NZ and his native America prior to this international breakthrough of his, T.I was able to take the world by storm thanks to him leaning towards a more mainstream sound compared to his crunk influenced work from earlier in the decade. That said, this is another album on this list that was a success more through the strength of its singles rather than the album itself.

This was a direct sequel to the previous album from Tina Arena's catalogue, it proved to be far less popular likely due to the novelty of her falling in and out of love wearing out as quickly as it revitalised her career. She would have another comeback period throughout the 2010's likely out of nostalgia for her work in the 90's.

The Hannah Montana phenomenon was so inescapable during the second half of the decade that Miley Cyrus was able to launch her career in the real world by bundling her debut album with her character's second album which found success from her fanbase worldwide. This wasn't too much the case here in Australia given how this was far more of a sleeper hit for her here than it being an immediate success like it was worldwide.

As this was a Christmas album, it was bound to be a success even if it's another example of artistic grave robbery in recent years as it's a duets album of artists "duetting" with the deceased king of rock and roll with his Christmas originals. What's truly baffling is that you'd swear this was a flop going over the ARIA charts as it only lasted four weeks with only one of them being in the top twenty.

There was no stopping Andre Rieu given how his lucrative Australian tour he had this year was popular enough worldwide for him to release the best moments of it on this album as well as an accompanying DVD that ARIA curiously counted towards their yearend charts for this year. This is why an album that underperformed makes the cut as naturally the DVD was what made this a success here.

Given how the lead single to Flo Rida's debut album was one of the biggest of the decade worldwide, it seemed inevitable that said album would be a massive success for the rapper. It turns out everyone was a bit sceptical of making this a success as this was only a sleeper hit here in Australia despite it spawning a few other minor hits on our charts.

This is the only notable success from the British duo the Ting ting's, mainly due to how the lead single became a massive worldwide smash due to how it became a shoe in for commercials shortly after its initial release. Their subsequent follow ups had no such luck as none of their other singles managed to find their way into commercials like their debut did.

This was a massive flop for Kings of Leon when it first came out in 2004, I'm not sure why given how their second album from earlier on this list did fairly well upon its initial release three years later for the band. It was given a second chance when their top entry on this list became one of the biggest albums of the decade, prompting these other two albums to stick around the lower half of our charts.

I would say that I'm disappointed this direct sequel to Paul Kelly's greatest hits package from eleven years prior was a flop this year here in Australia, except you have to keep in mind that he didn't find any success in his career between these two albums which would explain the lack of success this had for him.
