Australian albums of 2007

This was the last year that reality TV had a stranglehold of the mainstream in the music industry, from here on out, the internet would decide on what becomes popular in the music scene as evidence by some of the entries on this list.

If we were going purely by chart runs, this was the biggest album of the decade in Australia due to how it seemed like this would never leave our charts from its initial release. It was a huge comeback for P!nk following the commercial disappointment of her third album Try this which suggested that her time in the spotlight would come to an end in 2004. That obviously wasn't the case as she's still going strong to this day.

It took him a while to follow-up his solo debut, however once JT dropped his second album, it had confirmed him as the superstar of the decade given how inescapable the singles were as well as all of the critical acclaim it received. Whereas there was only a four-year gap between his debut and sophomore album, fans would have to wait for seven years before he released album number three.

This is the debut album from one of the most divisive artists to make it big so far in the 21st century, it's largely due to people finding it to be one of the wimpiest albums of all time due to its lead single despite coming from a man who has served his country in the army and achieved a high ranking in said army. For what it's worth, he does have a dedicated fanbase to this day, meaning people genuinely love his music.

This was a massive hit for Wolfmother who was a throwback band to the rock of the 70's which made them a household name on Triple J leading up to the release of their debut album. The songs saw a lot of airplay whenever they were released as singles, however it was only when "Joker and the thief" became a huge hit on the digital charts that the album finally became a mainstream success for them.

Although their album A song is a city was a huge success for Eskimo Joe, it was their third album which finally made them a household name thanks to its title track becoming one of the biggest hits of the decade thanks to its dominance on the digital charts upon its initial release. It helped the alternative band go from a mere fan favourite from listeners of Triple J to one of Australia's biggest names in music.

Here we are with what many consider to be one of the worst albums of the decade by what the internet considers to be the worst band of the decade, I personally think both get too much hate as there's far worse entries in both categories to choose from even if this is far from the best that rock has to offer (in my opinion.) It's a perfectly harmless post grunge album that even to this day still has its fans.

This was a massive success upon its initial release here in Australia, however its true popularity came with the deluxe edition which came out a year after its release and included some of the most iconic songs in her catalogue which added to already iconic classics the main album had. It remains her biggest album in her career, although some of her 2010's output do put up a decent challenge to that claim.

This solo outing from Fergie took its sweet time in becoming a success here in Australia, likely due to fans initially being put off by the first few singles as they seemed to suggest this was little more than a novelty album from the sole female member of BEP. They eventually came around on it once the fourth single became a massive worldwide hit for her, although there's still a polarising reception to it to this day.

It seemed like Nelly Furtado's popularity had come to an end when she released her second album Folklore earlier in the decade, I guess people felt it was more of the same from the Canadian singer/songwriter which resulted in its commercial failure. She decided to shake things up with her third album by recruiting Timbaland which saw her sound be more urban which proved to be a massive success for her worldwide.

This was another easy hit for Michael Bublé in Australia back in the day, in fact the album even came back a year after its initial release given how it was released around Mother's Day which people quickly picked up on his biggest fanbase around the world. Naturally the mothers of the world appreciated it when their children gave them a copy of this album as a thank you for being their parent.

I'm guessing Matchbox 20 titled their greatest hits package this way due to them feeling like they were not welcome in the alternative scene throughout the decade, I guess there are enough scathing reviews of their albums from rock snobs to justify how they would feel this way especially given how inescapably popular they were throughout the decade both as a band and especially with Rob Thomas.

This was the second album from the Veronicas which was released during a time where all types of rock music were finding massive success worldwide, it was a predictable success for the duo here given the success of their previous album as well as it finally gaining them an international audience right when the decade was coming to an end. Even with all of this success, they would struggle to make their third album due to issues with their label.

As divisive as her first solo album was from her longtime fans, it no doubt won her a bunch of new fans who were likely the people who made her second album a success as the longtime fans (me included) really don't care much for this album due to her doubling down on its camp factor. Still, there's plenty to enjoy on this album which is why it was a massive hit for her, the same can't be said for her 2010's material.

This had a bit of a slow rise to its popularity here in Australia, likely because this is the type of album that screams guilty pleasure thanks to how tastelessly provocative the tracks are (for the most part) that attracted fans who would appreciate this. It's definitely an album that filled a niche when it came to smutty music from pop divas, hence why it doesn't have much of a fanbase anymore.

These guys had been active for twelve years before they found any success with their fourth album, in fact this was all set to become yet another flop for the Scottish band until "Chasing cars" became a surprise hit on the digital charts worldwide. Due to a contrived rule regarding songs not charting without a physical release here in Australia, the song didn't chart until long after its popularity died out down under.

Although the singles from this album from Mika were a massive hit here upon their respective initial releases, the album itself only became a sleeper hit thanks to each of them causing it to rebound on the charts whenever one of them was released as a single, hence its low placement on this list. Given that they were cancelled earlier in the decade for essentially saying what the rest of the world was thinking of George Bush Jr (I agree that said cancellation was completely unfair) the Dixie Chicks were able to complete their redemption ark by releasing this album which essentially has them stand their ground with what they had to say with its lead single. Naturally it was a massive hit for them now that people could criticise the American president without any fear.

Even though her previous album remains her most successful to date, many critics felt that it was a crass display of Christina's public image which led to her rethinking how she was going to continue to mature away from her time with Disney. This felt like a disappointment compared to the Rogue trader's previous album, or rather, it was more of the same which is perhaps why it wasn't anywhere near as successful as Here come the drums given how the times were quickly changing when it came to 80's nostalgia as it shifted from homages to the genuine articles returning to the mainstream with their material. This compelled Natalie to leave the group to embark on a solo career.

It seemed appropriate for Elton John to release a greatest hits package this year given how the nostalgia circuit had taken the world by storm around this time, as such he gained modest success with this entry despite releasing a best of album a mere five years prior which was also a success for him.

Here's the debut album from Damien Leith that I mentioned from earlier on this list, I'm not sure why this wasn't released soon after his victory on Australian Idol other than to wait for the controversy of his win over Jessica Mauboy to die down so that he could find success with this album without receiving backlash from her fans.

Well, here's that dud of a third album from Shannon Noll I mentioned in my previous list, although I may have overstated its lack of success there as it did decently well thanks to having a lead single that was adopted as a sporting anthem thanks to his connections to Australian sport. This was the last time anyone cared about the former Australian Idol contestant as his fourth album was a complete flop.

This was another successful album that Bruce Springsteen released in the 21st century, there was nothing stopping this guy from recapturing some of the success he achieved in the 80's following a disappointing run he had in the 90's.

This is the third and final entry from the White stripes to appear on this site of mine, this is because they didn't release another album after this as the husband-and-wife duo would disband in 2011 even though they had already divorced by the time they started gaining traction with their music (what a bizarre business relationship.) At least they ended their career on a high note, and they also had minor success in their respective solo careers in the 2010's as well.

This was more of an immediate success for Kanye West here in Australia than his earlier work, although all of its success seemed to stem from its lead single which admittedly was one of the bigger hits of the decade here as it was throughout the rest of the world. By this point, Kanye was becoming more of a meme as his outlandish statements would pile on, although the worst was still yet to come.

This is the final album that Kylie Minogue found any sort of success with here in Australia, even then it was only a modest success at best here given how it failed to compete with a lot of the competition on this list alone. Even so, it was proof that even twenty years into her career, she could still find an audience with her music.

You may think with this album's title that this is another one of Jimmy Barnes' Soul deep albums, however this is thankfully more in line with his 90's material where he went for a mellower side of his usual pub rock sound that I guess saw enough success for it to qualify for this list.

Peak position #3

This is an album that charted all throughout the decade here in Australia, however it was only this year that it charted long enough to qualify for one of these lists given that this was a rather slow year in music here in Australia. I'm guessing these guys being available on digital media for the first time encouraged fans to buy a physical copy of this album to justify their illegal downloads from earlier in the decade.

This was a flop if we were simply looking at the standard edition, however it became a huge sleeper hit when it was reissued as a deluxe edition likely due to the album already spawning three of Akon's biggest hits in his catalogue throughout the world which eventually convinced us Aussies to check out what else the troubled RNB singer had to offer.

Andre Bocelli had a good run in the mainstream while it lasted, as such it makes sense he would find success with a greatest hits package just as his popularity was coming to an end in favour for the likes of Andre Rieu and Paul Potts worldwide.

It looks like Celine Dion was able to find success with one more album in her catalogue before the internet (unfairly) declared her as a joke due to her infamous cover of an AC/DC classic from earlier in the decade, evidently the deluxe edition came with perfume which was also widely ridiculed upon its initial release.

P!nk was so inescapable here in Australia that Sony decided to bundle her first four albums as a four for one deal which we Aussies took as a bargain, as such each of her entries up until this point became a success for a second time with this one entry alone.

We have another live album to serve as a victory album from Australian Idol, this time it's from Natalie Gauci who is often regarded as the least memorable winner of the series thanks to the lack of success she saw even at the time of her victory.

This was released the previous year to deafening silence for Josh Groban, however it was given a second chance this year here in Australia due to it being a popular choice for a Mother's Day gift which saw it surge up the charts during that season here.

It makes sense that Keith Urban would want to release a greatest hits package around this time given how he had finally been given mainstream exposure due to his marriage to Nicole Kidman worldwide. It was at this point his most successful release here in Australia, although the best was yet to come in the 2010's.

This is an album from the Killers comprising of previously unreleased material following the success of their earlier entry on this list, it was a decent success here in Australia and likely would've been even bigger had this not been eaten up by digital downloads where the band was far more popular.

This is the second and final album to come from the Young divas, it's another covers album as the girls continue the formula of their first album from the previous year which yielded less successful results. The other difference here is that Ricki Lee was swapped out for Jessica Mauboy due to the former having a massive breakthrough with her second album this year.

Given the surprise success he had the previous year with his second comedy album, radio presenter Matt Tilley followed up the magic this year with this entry that proved to be equally as successful as what he had to offer before. Sadly, this is where the magic ran out for the DJ/comedian as his next album would flop.

From what I can gather, David Hobson was an Australian opera singer who scored minimal success throughout the 00's here due to an overcrowded market. This was his only success which I feel was more due to it being a Christmas release than anything else.

The Hannah Montana phenomenon was so inescapable during the second half of the decade that Miley Cyrus was able to launch her career in the real world by bundling her debut album with her character's second album which found success from her fanbase worldwide. This wasn't too much the case here in Australia given how this was far more of a sleeper hit for her here than it being an immediate success like it was worldwide.

If you're wondering why this album became a success for the third time here in Australia this year (fourth if you separate both times it was a success in the 90's) that's because this recharted following the release of Meat loaf's third entry into this series which bombed the previous year upon its initial release.

If you're wondering what the heck Choir of hard knocks is meant to be, it's a charity for the homeless operating in Melbourne who decided to release an album which became a modest success this year, presumably with the clientele or workers to create some authenticity of the streets of the major city.

This album only makes the cut for my list due to a technicality as it appears on ARIA's year end list for this year, admittedly it did fairly well even if it had a pitiful chart run here back in the day. My main gripe is that this made the cut over dozens of albums that scraped the top ten throughout the year, proving once again that ARIA had some bias back in the day even if it's only gotten worse in recent years.
